Particle-size information
Review the current particle-size profile in the context of the intended filtration and printhead route.
FORMULATION GUIDE · AUG 2026
For aqueous inkjet development, pigment selection starts with colour but succeeds or fails in the complete formulation, print process and validation plan.
THE CORE IDEA
Self-dispersed pigment technology uses hydrophilic functional groups on the pigment surface to support dispersion in water-based systems. This can make the pigment surface itself an active part of the formulation discussion, alongside resin, humectant, additives and process conditions.
A surface-modified pigment is not a universal compatibility claim. Current product data and finished-ink testing remain necessary for each formulation and end use.
THREE FORMULATION QUESTIONS
Define the printhead, filtration route, circulation conditions, print mode and target viscosity before comparing potential colorant platforms.
Consider resin or binder direction, pH range, co-solvents, humectants, surfactants and the substrate or application process.
Set a storage, transport and operating-stability plan that reflects the real development and production environment.
USEFUL DATA, NOT GENERIC PROMISES
Review the current particle-size profile in the context of the intended filtration and printhead route.
Discuss solid content, viscosity, pH, conductivity and surface tension with the actual ink vehicle in mind.
Confirm the observations and measurements that matter to the ink, printer, substrate and finished application.
WHERE TO START
Carboxylic and phosphate surface-chemistry platforms can provide different starting points for aqueous inkjet evaluation. The appropriate choice depends on the complete system; it should not be determined by chemistry name or colour index alone.
